Charles University - the oldest university in the Czech Republic and Central Europe - being founded in 1348 by Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. At the moment there are 16 faculties at the university. The Faculty of Education was opened in 1946. It has more than 4000 students in both regular and extra-ordinary forms of study. There are 21 departments in the faculty, including two scientific research institutes involving 344 educationalists, scientists and specialists. The Department of Information Technology is responsible for the education in the area of Information and Education Technology for all students.
