Introduction to E-learning

In this section you can find:
  • A power point presentation giving an overview of e-learning in education
  • A background article on E-learning to accompany the presentation
  • A Powerpoint presentation giving another example of a virtual mobility, the project 'SMILE' from Koning Willem1 College in the Netherlands
  • Extra information to accompany the PP presentation on SMILE

It is clear why we felt the LENTEC project should be an E-learning project: we wanted to enable teachers and students to cross borders virtually in order to provide a reason for ' real' communication in a mutual target language. There are, of course, other reasons for integrating E-learning:
  • E-learning is a relatively new way of teaching and learning, using ICT and Internet technology.
  • By using the Internet it is possible to optimalise or to modernise teaching and learning because it offers opportunities of flexibility of access and content, tailor-made courses, communication between teacher/mentor and student and between students themselves.
  • The interest in the use of ICT has to do with the changes in the demands of teaching and learning especially in vocational education where the changes in technology take place at an ever-increasing pace.
  • In the world of work, processes and technical aids are becoming more complex. Workers can be continually re-trained in different aspects at different times, for example, shift-workers. Training can be continually reviewed and updated.
  • In teaching it means courses can be renewed at any moment, that lesson material, based on authentic vocational material, can be kept up to date and teachers and students are able to work together outside normal school hours and outside the school perimeter, in fact from anywhere in the world as long as there is access to the Internet
